Ju’Riese Colón

Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Center for SafeSport

Ju’Riese Colón is the Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, where since July 2019 she has led the organization’s strategic vision and direction. Before her Center tenure, Ju’Riese served as National Vice President of Child & Club Safety for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, developing and leading the child safety policies and initiatives for over 1,100 U.S. Boys & Girls Clubs organizations and nearly 4,300 Boys & Girls Club locations.

Prior to that, Ju’Riese served as Executive Director of Prevention & Outreach for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), leading prevention and education programs related to child abduction and sexual exploitation and their delivery to children, families, and the public. Ju’Riese was with NCMEC for 15 years.

An experienced child advocate who serves as an expert on issues related to child safety, Ju’Riese has led prevention and outreach initiatives with youth-serving organizations serving families, educators, law enforcement, and diverse communities. She earned bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice and Spanish from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jordan Greenbaum

Physician specializing in the area of child protection

Jordan Greenbaum is a physician specializing in the area of child protection. She is the medical director of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. She is a past medical director of the Stephanie Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Greenbaum is a board member of the International Society on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and a past president of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. She has provided training and technical assistance to health and mental health professionals, as well as international school staff, social workers, law enforcement officers and prosecutors globally to improve the community response to child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. She provides training and technical assistance regarding the trauma-informed, rights-based approach to interacting with children and families who have experienced trauma related to sexual, physical or community violence, and forced migration.

Chris Newlin, MS LPC

Chief Executive Officer of the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC)

Chris is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) in Huntsville, AL, where he is responsible for providing leadership and management of the agency, as well as participating in national and international training and leadership activities regarding the protection of children. The NCAC was the first Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) in the world and provides child abuse prevention and intervention services in Huntsville/Madison County; and also houses the NCAC Training Center, the Southern Regional Children’s Advocacy Center, the NCAC Virtual Training Center, and the Child Abuse Library Online (CALiO). The NCAC is a past multi-year winner of the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Workplace Ethics; 2012 Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit of the Year; 2016 Federal Bureau of Investigation Director’s Community Leadership Award recipient; (multi-year finalist), winner in 2017 and 2019 of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Best Places to Work; and a Private Sector Member of the Virtual Global Taskforce. Chris has more than 27 years of experience working in CACs as a forensic interviewer, victim advocate, therapist, clinical director, and executive director. He has provided training in more than 36 countries at numerous international conferences and continues to provide technical assistance on a regular basis to professionals working to develop multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and CACs throughout the world. Chris is a past recipient of the David Chadwick Outstanding Professional Award from the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (2020), the International Impact Award from the International Services Council of Alabama (2010), and the Hendrix College Odyssey Award for Service to the World (2010). He serves on numerous national work groups including Boys and Girls Club of America, Child & Club Safety National Task Force; the Virtual Global Taskforce; and International Association of Chiefs of Police, Juvenile Justice and Child Protection Committee – Child Exploitation Subcommittee. Chris received his master’s degree in school psychology from the University of Central Arkansas, is a licensed professional counselor, and has completed coursework at the Harvard University Business School Executive Education Program.

Melissa Stroebel

Vice President of Research & Insights at Thorn

Melissa Stroebel is the Vice President of Research & Insights at Thorn. Melissa has spent nearly 20 years combating the online sexual exploitation of children as a victim identification analyst, product manager, and researcher. In her current role, she serves as a subject matter expert and drives strategic research examining emerging threats and trends in online exploitation. Melissa holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan and a master’s in forensic science from George Washington University.

Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen

Trauma focused cognitive psychotherapist at Suojellaan Lapsia, Protect Children

Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen is the co-founder and Executive Director, and Trauma focused cognitive psychotherapist at Suojellaan Lapsia, Protect Children. She has worked for 30 years in the health sector, 20 years protecting children from all forms of sexual violence, especially online child sexual abuse and exploitation. She works on multiple governmental and international expert working groups and she has extensive clinical knowledge working with victims of sexual violence and their families.

She created and was the driving force behind the Re-Direction research project which for the first time engaged with CSA offenders operating in the dark web, these research findings and the sheer scale of them has transformed the knowledge and understanding academics have of this offender cohort.

She leads the You Are enough -peer support groups for parents whose children have become victims of sexual violence. Nina is a well-known lecturer at national and international conferences and has trained thousands of professionals and law enforcement working in the field. She has dedicated her career and life to furthering the rights of the child, especially the rights of victims and survivors of sexual violence.

Douglas Walker

Chief Programs Director at Mercy Family Center

As the Chief Programs Director at Mercy Family Center, Douglas Walker has been developing, leading, and managing all community-based programs for the past nine years. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in Louisiana and Missouri, with a specialty in treating psychological trauma in children and adolescents.

He is passionate about harnessing innovation, forward-thinking solutions, and strategic planning to create maximum community benefit, while being a responsible steward to human and capital resources. He has been involved in several national and international initiatives, such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Disaster Technical Assistance Center, the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, and the Council of International Schools. He is also a certified clinician, master trainer, and authorized facilitator for various evidence-based trauma-focused models and tools, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools, Psychological First Aid, Skills for Psychological Recovery, and Stewards of Children.
